Access to Healthy Food

Access to Healthy Food
Advocate for policies which ensure everyone has access to enough nutritious food.  Access to Healthy Food includes adequate incomes, emergency food, walkable food, and culturally appropriate foods.

Adequate Incomes
Advocate for adequate income for everyone

Food should be a basic human right. We should advocate for policies that guarantee everyone has enough income for a nutritious diet, while at the same time protecting the viability of farmers, food processors and distributors as well as the needs of individuals in the long term.

Emergency Food
Continue improving emergency food assistance

Tens of thousands of residents of Waterloo Region depend on food banks to help feed their families. Ultimately we need to eliminate the need for emergency food assistance, but in the meantime charitable food and meals must be available in a respectful way.

Walkable Food
Improve walkable access to healthy food

Many people have no convenient access to local and healthy foods within walking distance of their homes or workplaces. Our new regional policy supports walkable access to stores and markets with healthy food, and we must ensure it is enacted.

Culturally Appropriate Foods
Increase the availability of culturally appropriate food

Some people have difficulty finding food that is culturally-acceptable to them, whether they are new Canadians who seek their traditional foods or people on restricted diets for health, religious, or other reasons.
