Organization Mission

A\J’s editorial mission is to be “Canada’s Environmental Voice” by providing a forum for civilized debate and, when appropriate, to advocate for positive and sustainable solutions.

Organization Description

Alternatives Journal (A\J), Canada’s national environmental magazine, delivers the latest news and ideas about Canadian and world environmental issues.

Featuring thoughtful analysis by the nation’s foremost environmental thinkers, plus profiles of inspiring environmental leaders and sustainable living ideas to steal, A\J offers both a vision of a more sustainable future and the tools needed to take us there.

Published since 1971, A\J is Canada’s oldest environmental magazine, and is the official publication of the Environmental Studies Association of Canada.

A\J regularly publishes articles related to sustainable food systems, food security and environmental issues affecting food locally, nationally and globally.

Areas of Involvement

  • Research on food system issues - We regularly publish articles based on new research about food issues. We feature a "food innovator" profile in each issue, and had a food-themed issue in July/August 2013.
  • Education/teaching - We regularly publish articles about the intersections of food and the environment for a mainstream audience (including the WR food charter!), and promote additional coverage through social media.

Organization Priorities

  • Connecting people to local food system - We will continue to cover food/sustainability issues of all kinds, and are happy to help promote initiatives.
