1. Calling All Waterloo Region Foodies!
The Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable is looking for people to join us in its work to build a healthy local food system.  We need people to help with several projects related to the Roundtable food system priorities and its website. The positions and their descriptions are posted our blog post. On a related note, eleven nominations were received for the five vacancies on the Roundtable, and the Roundtable chose five of them at its November 23rd meeting. The new members’ terms start January 1st, and we’ll feature the new members in an upcoming post.

 

2. Local Food in Health Care
Brendan Wylie-Toal of My Sustainable Canada spoke at the Kitchener Public Library last week about efforts to get more local food into hospitals and long-term care facilities. His presentation and accompanying audio can be viewed online in the Roundtable blog post: it’s as if you were actually at the event!

 

3. Meat Processing Industry Addresses Food Safety
In her new edition of the “Meat Press,” journalist Hayley LaPalme speaks to representatives of the Ontario Independent Meat Processors about food safety regulations and why so many small operators are going out of business. For details, see blog post.

 

4. Kootenay Report Profiles Roundtable
A new report reviewing the experiences of food policy councils and organizations features a three-page summary of the Roundtable and its accomplishments. For details, see Roundtable blog post.

 

5. Food Studies Conference in Waterloo May 26-28, 2012
The annual conference of the Canadian Association for Food Studies (CAFS) will take place at the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University next May. CAFS is currently seeking proposals for papers to be presented at the conference: the proposal deadline is January 15, 2012.
