Please find below the latest update on Waterloo Region's food system as described on the website of the Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable at www.wrfoodsystem.ca.
1. First event in Healthy Food System Series on Tuesday night at KPL
Make sure you have Tuesday, September 29 in your calendars for the first event in the Roundtable's Healthy Food System series, which will focus on the 100-Mile Challenge organized by the Healing Path Naturopathic Centre. The speakers will address the challenges and learnings in their efforts to eat only food from within a 100-mile radius of their homes. Full details on all six events in the series - up to February 2010 - are on the Roundtable's website under Recent News.
2. Debate continues in The Record on Quality of Local Foods
Building on a debate started by Jim Romahn in the Waterloo Region Record in early September complaining about the allegedly poor quality of local produce at farmers' markets, Peter Shawn Taylor wrote a piece on September 18th headlined "Save the Planet: Buy California Berries." So far, one response letter to the editor - by a grower with Herrle's Markets - has been published. See links to the stories on the Roundtable's Discussion Forum.
3. Call for Nominations for Food System Roundtable
The Waterloo Region Food System Roundtable is seeking nominations to fill vacancies in its membership. The terms of ten current members are expiring at the end of 2009, at at least some of them will not be seeking to renew their term. The vacant positions are two-year terms, beginning in 2010. Nominations are due by October 30th, and final membership decisions will be made on November 18th. For more information, see the Call for Nominations.
